Beliefs and Values

At Greenwood we believe that the church is the body of Christ. This means that we believe the church is the physical presence of Christ in the world, led by the Holy Spirit of the Risen Christ. Thus our aim is to do God's will. We believe that God calls and leads us to be Christ in the community in which we live, and to the world.

At Greenwood we teach core Christian beliefs and values in the United Methodist tradition. For more information, visit the United Methodist Church website.

What Is A United Methodist?

United Methodist are the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States. In the Winchester area we are the largest denomination, with nearly 33% of the population being connected to the United Methodist Church among approximately 30 churches. The roots of the denomination go back deep into the past with the first Methodist churches appearing in the late 1700's.

As United Methodists we hold to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith. We are evangelical and moderates rather than fundamentalists. We place value on the intellect and modern science, while at the same time believe the the Bible to be the authoritative guide of faith and practice. We attempt to be passionate about out faith with strong convictions, while recognizing that these times are raising new questions and offering new opportunities to be faithful to Christ here and now as we wait for the return of Christ. We believe to live in Christ is be with grace and compassion for all our family and neighbors.

As United Methodist we are known for our emphasis on a personal faith, lived out in community, and in concrete ways in the world. We have through the ages valued well-informed and passionate preaching, worship that is lively and of the people, and small groups where people grow together in faith.

Also as United Methodists we openly welcome anyone interested in learning more about the Christian faith.

Confirmation and Growth

Our Mission: To build a Christian community where children and youth and their families who are new to the Christian faith can be nourished in their budding faith as the become deeply committed Christians.

Our Vision: To change lives, transforming communities, and renewing the church

Our Journey: Knowing God, Loving God, Serving God

It is our desire that all our children and youth have an environment where they can safely grow into deeply committed Christians and carry forward to the next generations God's mission for Greenwood in this community.

We do this through the confirmation class then through the development of a gathered life in Christ, where the children and youth come to know God, grow in loving God, and to find joy in serving God through following Jesus into the community and the world. We attempt to do this by developing group life that builds Christian character of faith, love and service.

Confirmation is a time when 7th to 8th graders make a personal decision to confirm their vow of baptism. They will do these through classes held over several months as they exploring who Christ is, and what a long-term relationship with Him is like, and how we as United Methodists follow Him.

For us confirmation is a step in a life-long journey of pursuing the heights, depths and widths of God's love and making a vow to live in relationship with Him for the rest of your life.
